About Portland School of Ballet

Founded in 1980, Portland School of Ballet is home to the leading classical training in Maine. Our goal at PSB is to create a healthy environment for all students to learn the art of ballet. We are determined to help our dancers set and reach goals, while at the same time assisting with the development of their artistry.

Portland School of Ballet follows a Vaganova-based curriculum; Vaganova is the Russian training system which creates a connected sense of movement and an expressive range. As they progress through PSB’s divisions, students develop an understanding of correct posture and placement, musicality, coordination, and artistry.

Alumni have continued their studies at colleges such as The Hartt School, Butler University, and Boston Conservatory, and have accepted trainee positions with Portland Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Boston Ballet, and Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, among others. Regardless of whether or not our dancers pursue dance at the collegiate or professional level, the lessons they learn in our studios will be an asset to the next steps they take in their lives.

The Preparatory Division is a stepping stone into classical ballet training for students ages 3-7.

The Junior Division will help students ages 7-13 build the strength and understanding necessary for long-term success as both dancers and well-rounded individuals.

The Senior Division provides strong technical and artistic training for teens in an environment that allows for maximum growth and achievement.

The Pre-Professional Division is designed for students who are looking to join a professional dance company or to continue their studies by pursuing a Ballet Degree in college.
