Portland Ballet is looking for someone dynamic and enthusiastic to join our leadership team as Executive Director at an exciting time of growth. The ideal candidate would be business-minded with a passion for the performing arts or an eagerness to learn while participating in Portland’s arts community. We are committed to fostering an enriching learning and performance culture by recruiting a diverse team of performers, staff, and partners.  

Portland Ballet is Maine's professional ballet company, and home of Portland School of Ballet, with a mission of enriching the community through ballet performance and education. Portland Ballet attracts professional dancers from around the country and the world who come to Maine to dance with Portland Ballet's company, and offers the state's leading training in classical ballet. 

Portland Ballet is a 501(c)(3) organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, which is responsible for selecting and directly supervising the Executive Director.

The Executive Director’s job responsibilities include: 

  • working closely alongside the Artistic Director and the Board of Directors, and will oversee and collaborate with Portland Ballet's close-knit staff

  • working with the Artistic Director and the Board to develop and implement strategies for moving Portland Ballet forward and maintaining its financial stability at an exciting time of growth and innovation

  • sharing overall responsibility for the administration, planning, marketing, organization development, and staffing of Portland Ballet

  • taking primary responsibility for the fundraising activities of the organization. 

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities (KSAs)

Education: Bachelor's Degree Required 

Preferred Experience and Expertise:

  • A commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and belonging.

  • Transparent and high integrity leadership, with a demonstrated ability to lead collaboratively

  • Prior experience in nonprofit management/leadership preferred.

  • Enthusiasm and interest in Portland’s arts and nonprofit community.

  • Strong financial management skills.

  • Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to the nonprofit sector preferred.

  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and management.
